An Introduction
The Human Rights Commission’s Act (Law No: 6/2006) provided for the establishment of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM), as an independent legal entity having a common seal and the capacity to sue and be sued and enter into transactions in its own name.

Background
The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives was first established on 10 December 2003 as an independent and autonomous statutory body created by Decree by the President of the Republic of the Maldives with the right to sue and be sued.

Features and Function of the Commission
The Commission has the power to visit and observe any authority, jail or any organization in the Maldives and to submit necessary recommendations to it on the reform to be made on the functions, procedures and physical facilities which may be made necessary for such an organization for the protection of human rights in the country.
