HRCM releases its report on Preventive Visit to Maafushi Jail

Human Rights Commission of the Maldives has released a report based on its monitoring visit conducted to K. Maafushi Jail, managed by the Department of Penitentiary and Rehabilitation services under the Ministry of Home Affairs, on 28 April 2009.

 

The Commission found that currently no rehabilitation activities are being conducted in the Jail. The report which puts forward 18 recommendations has been presented to the concerned authorities.

 

This visit was conducted by the National Preventive Mechanism established under the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives, as stipulated under the Optional Protocol of the Convention Against Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman and Degrading Punishment or Treatment.

 

HRCM publicizes NPM report on Guraidhoo visit

The National Preventive Mechanism established under the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives has released its report on K.Guraidhoo, Home for People with Special Needs today. This report is based on NPM's visit to the center on 2 April 2009. This visit was a follow-up to assess the implementation of the recommendations proposed by the Commission on 14 August 2008.

 

The report is based upon 11 recommendations which include the transfer of a person related to drug abuse residing illegitimately at the Center, to family care or a rehabilitation center immediately.

HRCM Report on Visit to Maafushi Jail Submitted to Concerned Authorities

Human Rights Commission of the Maldives has released a report based on findings of the Commission, following its visit to Kaafu Atoll Maafushi Jail, on 3 February 2009. The visit was conducted following a series of complaints filed at the Commission, by the management of Maafushi Jail and parents of detainees regarding the deteriorating situation of the jail and alleged violations of human rights at the facility.

 

 

HRCM visits Minimum Security Jail in Feydhoo Finolhu

Human Rights Commission of the Maldives has conducted an inspection visit to the Minimum Security Jail established in Feydhoo Finolhu today. The purpose of this visit was to examine the conditions and the facilities provided by this center, before several inmates based in Maafushi Jail and those transferred to Male’ on house arrest on the pretext of awarding probation, by the Ministry of Home Affairs, are relocated to Feydhoo Finolhu minimum security jail. The team from HRCM, has indicated several verbal recommendations to the concerned authorities based on their findings subsequent to the visit. These authorities include the Attorney General, the Ministry for Defense and the President’s Office. The mentioned recommendations would officially be forwarded to the concerned authorities shortly.

 

Monitoring visit to Kudakudhinge Hiyaa

The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives conducted an inspection visit to 'Kudakudhinge Hiyaa'(Government Shelter for Homeless Children)' operating under the former Ministry of Gender and family' located in Male' atoll Vilingili' on 12 November 2008. The inspection team from the commission included Commission Members and Staff.

This is the Commission's second visit to the institution, which currently fosters 42 children including a 10 day old baby. In today's visit the Commission especially looked into the degree to which the recommendations put forward by the HRCM in its report based on the findings of the visit carried out on 1 August 2007 has been implemented.

A report on the recommendations and findings based on this inspection visit will be publicized shortly.

HRCM visits Hathifushi Jail

Human Rights Commission of the Maldives conducted an inspection visit to the Haa Alif Hathifushi Low Risk Jail, on 21 August 2008. The Hathifushi Low Risk Jail is currently under construction. The inspection team from HRCM included some Commission Members and staff of complaints department.

A report based on the findings observed from this visit would be publicized shortly.

Guraidhoo Visit
