Human Rights Awareness Workshop - Fuvamulah

Target Group: Atoll Chief, Island Chiefs, Magistrates, Senior Police Officers, Senior MNDF Officers, Senior personnel of Women’s Development Committees.

Workshop on Human Rights held in Fuamulah Atoll is one of a series of workshops held for the above target groups with the aim of increasing awareness on Human Rights and on the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives. The long term objective of these workshops is to create a culture of Respect for Human Rights in the Maldivian society.
Outline of the Workshop:
The main topics that were covered under the workshop include:
1) An Introduction to Human Rights.
2) Human Rights and Islam
3) Definition of Human Rights and the rights set forth in the Constitution of the Maldives.
4) Articles that relate to Human Rights in the “New Constitution†and some of the International Conventions that Maldives is party to.
5) Basic understanding of Human Rights by the participants and the rights in accordance with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the use of this document.
6) Human Rights Case Scenarios.
7) A comprehensive outline of the HRCM Act and the work carried out by the Commission.
8) The Complaints Procedure of HRCM.
9) The use of force – International Standards.
10) The Right to vote and importance of voting.
11) Suggestions and Recommendations on the type of activities that could be conducted by different groups– atoll or island office / magistrates/ law enforcement/ women’s committees.
