HRCM calls for discussions among political parties and concerned authorities to protect and fulfill the rights guaranteed in the constitution


Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has called for discussions amongst the Government, Parliament, Judicial Institutions and Political Parties regarding measures that can ensure the ideal delivery of the human rights guaranteed to the Maldivian citizens.

 

Speaking at a news conference held at HRCM, the president of HRCM Ahmed Saleem requested all concerned parties and the media to sincerely work for this cause as a national issue and give full cooperation to improve the current human rights situation.

 

HRCM has shared its concerns on the current human rights situation in Maldives and requested from relevant authorities to begin discussing ways in which the human rights of citizens can be advanced and protected.. Making this request in an open letter sent to the President, Speaker of the Parliament, Chief Justice and all Political Parties; HRCM also asked for these discussions to begin very soon. The letter mentioned that with the political, social, and economic challenges faced by the nation; the time has come for all concerned parties to participate, discuss and minimize differences in their efforts to protect human rights and find solutions to these issues that prioritize national interest. Seven main points of concern for these discussions were outlined in detail in these letters.
