HRCM Congratulates the People’s Majlis for approving the ratification of CRPD

The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives has congratulated the People’s Majlis upon passing the “Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities” (CRPD) for ratification.
In a Press Release issued earlier today, the Commission remarked that this is an important step towards completing the legal framework to protect the rights of persons with disabilities in cognizance with special protection guaranteed to such people under Article 35 of the Constitution, and also because CRPD is one of the main international human rights conventions .
The Commission hopes that this convention would be ratified in a near future, and that the necessary laws for the implementation of this convention, as required by the article 93 (b) of the Maldivian Constitution, will soon come in to existence.
Maldives signed this convention aimed at promoting, protecting, and ensuring the full enjoyment of, human rights and equality by persons with disabilities on 2nd October 2007.
