HRCM Releases Annual Report 2009

Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) released its Annual Report 2009 today. The Report was released by the President of HRCM at a press conference held in the Commission office. After the releasing of the report, Secretary General of the Commission Ahmed Shahid gave a presentation highlighting the important points of the report.
Addressing the media, Commission president Ahmed Saleem highlighted the ongoing and planned works of HRCM . He distinctively noted the recent efforts of the commission to initiate political dialogue amongst Institutions of the State, Political Parties, and Media about problems related to the human rights situation in the Maldives.
Vice-President of the Commission Mohamed Zahid talked about the ongoing survey to assess the human rights situation in the health sector and also gave the rationale for a planned research about suspected human trafficking in Maldives.
Commission member Maryam Azra explained about the various human rights awareness programs planned for this year mentioning that this year’s target group were educational practitioners noting especially the program targeting Teacher Educators.
Commission member Majida Majdy expressed concerns over not receiving bills drafted by the government for HRCM to comment on, and also over Majlis and the Government not giving enough consideration for the comments made by the commission.
After members’ remarks, floor was opened for questions from the media officials.
