Report on the visit to Asseyri Jail shared with concerned authorities

The Human Rights Commission of Maldives has shared the report of the visit to Asseyri Jail on 26 December 2009, with concerned government authorities today.

Asseyri Jail is a minimum-security prison in K.Himmafushi for low-risk prisoners under the Department of Penitentiary and Rehabilitation Services (D.P.R.S).

In this report the Commission observed noteworthy positive and negative aspects of the facility and made suggestions for further improvement. Among the points which were noted as requiring further improvement are; lack of an effective records system to handle official documents like personal files of the prisoners, absence of fire extinguishing equipment and an established protocol for emergency situations; and inadequate personnel benefits and staff shortage.

The report, which has been shared with the concerned institutions, will be publicized at a later date.
