HRCM Discusses S.Gan Temporary Jail Report With Vice President

The HRCM met with the Vice President of Maldives Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik to discuss the Commission’s report on its visit to the Seenu Gan Temporary Jail.
The report was sent to the concerned authorities on 4 January 2009. In the meeting, the Vice President assured the HRCM that the recommendations put forward by the Commission will be implemented expeditiously.
Currently, S. Gan Temporary Jail is being managed by the Maldives National Defense Force which is contrary to international best practices and customary law on human rights which clearly discourages management of prisons by the military.
The HRCM has stressed in its report and meeting with the Vice President that the management of this prison be handed over to the Department of Penitentiary and rehabilitation Services as stated in the under article 1.1 of the Prison Regulation at the earliest possible.
