The Voter Education Campaign “My Vote, My Right, My Responsibility”, was launched today by the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives at a press conference held at the Commission.
In Launching the Campaign, the President of the Human Rights Commission stated that every effort is being made to make the upcoming presidential elections free and fair by disseminating relevant information to the general public. Already several activities are ongoing, organized by NGOs, the media and the government in making people aware of the democratic process and voting rights.
This campaign is a part of the ongoing work by HRCM in working towards voter rights and in scrutinizing the various aspects of elections to provide an enabling environment where everyone’s rights are upheld and respected.
At the function held to launch the campaign the vice president of the Commission Mr. Mohamed Zahid stated that during the commission’s visits to the atolls this week it was revealed that an underlying fear of possible conflicts and the cultivation of the feeling of hatred rests with the public with regards to the upcoming presidential elections. He called upon the presidential candidates to uphold the values of democracy and best practices during their respective campaigns.
A music show will be held at artificial beach tomorrow night from 10: 00pm to 12:00pm as part of this campaign.
