HRCM releases report on Assessment of Housing Situation in the Maldives

The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives has released its report on the housing situation in the Maldives today. This report titled ‘Rapid Assessment of the Housing situation in the Maldives’ which puts forward 18 recommendations, is aimed to assist the government and all concerned in taking the necessary steps to better the housing problems in the country.
Speaking at the function held to inaugurate this report the President of the Commission Mr. Ahmed Saleem stated that he believes this report would be an important contribution on housing that the commission has accomplished to date.
Also speaking at the function the Vice President of the Commission Mr. Mohamed Zahid assured that HRCM will not stop with this report but would pursue this issue by monitoring extent to which the concerned authorities and the government employs the recommendation put forth in providing effective remedies to housing situation in the Maldives.
At the end of 2007 from cases reported to the HRCM, those related to housing issues were the third most serious and highest in number.
