National Consultation on Human Trafficking

A National Consultation to prepare a paper to review the SAARC Convention on Preventing and Combating Trafficking in Woman and Children for Prostitution, was held today, 13 May 2009 at the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives. The meeting was held in collaboration with International Organization for Migration, Dhaka, Bangladesh with assistance from Asian Development Bank (ADB).

 

At the inauguration ceremony of this meeting the President of Human Rights Commission, Mr. Ahmed Saleem, and the permanent secretary of ministry of health and family Mrs. Mazeena Jameel made a statement regarding the role and current status of Trafficking in the Maldives.

 

A consultant from India, Ms. Aparna Bhat with assistance from Ms. Nishat Chowdhry and Mr. Adnan Sirajee from the International Organization for Migration facilitated the meeting.

 

The Steering Committee dealing with this issue is the Ministry of Health and Family and other stakeholders participated in this consultation. Representatives from Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maldives Police Services, Ministry of Health and Family, Department of Gender and family protection Services, UNICEF, Department of Immigration and Emigration, Child abuse watch Maldives and HRCM attended this meeting.
