Seminar for Deputy Ministers and Permanent Secretaries Closing Ceremony

A seminar on Human Rights, for Deputy Ministers and Permanent Secretaries of various Government Ministries, was held today at Bandos Island Resort. The Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Abdullah Shahid was the Chief Guest at the opening ceremony of the seminar. Along with the Chief Guest, UN Resident Coordinator Mr. Patrice Coeur-Bizot and The President of Human Rights Commission Mr. Ahmed Saleem addressed the participants.

 

The seminar highlighted the main areas of the important Human Rights Conventions signed by Maldives, their dimensions, their implications, and the obstacles to their effective application and realization. The Seminar also focused on the Human Rights Chapter in the amended National Constitution to find out the relevance of Constitutional provisions for Ministry operations and seek solutions and good practices to implement human rights. It also highlighted the importance of the Government to implement its international human rights obligations through constructive collaboration with the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives.

 

The sessions of the seminar, were taken by, The Human Rights Advisor to the Human Rights Commission Mr. Peter Hoskins, UN Human Rights Advisor Mr. Laurent Meillan and The Commissioner of Legal Reform Mr. Mohamed Anil. The Members of the Human Rights Commission also participated in the panel discussions.

 

A total of 21 personnel from various Government Ministries participated in the one day seminar.
