HRCM Public Lecture Attended by Over 80 people

Human Rights Commission of the Maldives held a public lecture on 'Human Rights in the Administration of Justice' at STELCO hall last night.
It was attended by over 80 people from the public. The lecture was delivered by Professor Abdul Azeez Bari from the International University of Malaysia, who is a renowned expert in the field. In his speech he congratulated and praised the people of Maldives for the commendable constitution of the country which includes a comprehensive chapter on human rights and fundamental freedoms.
On the other hand he urged the civil society and NGOss to concentrate their efforts to ensure the rights afforded by the constitution. He also talked about the importance of giving consideration to the Organization of the Islamic Conference Charter on Human Rights as well the Cairo Declaration of Human Rights by Islamic states such as the Maldives.
The lecture was followed by a question and answer session where Professor Bari responded to the many queries posed by the public.

HRCM visits Minimum Security Jail in Feydhoo Finolhu

Human Rights Commission of the Maldives has conducted an inspection visit to the Minimum Security Jail established in Feydhoo Finolhu today. The purpose of this visit was to examine the conditions and the facilities provided by this center, before several inmates based in Maafushi Jail and those transferred to Male’ on house arrest on the pretext of awarding probation, by the Ministry of Home Affairs, are relocated to Feydhoo Finolhu minimum security jail. The team from HRCM, has indicated several verbal recommendations to the concerned authorities based on their findings subsequent to the visit. These authorities include the Attorney General, the Ministry for Defense and the President’s Office. The mentioned recommendations would officially be forwarded to the concerned authorities shortly.



HRCM meets with Civil Service Commission

Human Rights Commission of the Maldives has met with the Civil Service Commission expressing grave concerns regarding the imminent job threat of several civil servants following the change in the government and the concurrent changes being brought to the state administration. HRCM has received some complaints from some civil servants reading probable risks threatening their job security. In this meeting Human rights Commission highlighted the fact that it had appealed to the current government to ensure that they adopt a professional and systematic approach in appointing and terminating employees during the transition of administrations, in the press conference held by the Commission on 2 November 2008.
In this meeting HRCM urged the Civil Service Commission to ensure that the mentioned process does not over ride the Civil Service Commission Act or that of the Employment Act. On the other hand the civil Service Commission assured HRCM of the same and the Human rights Commission expressed gratitude and praised CSC for its affirmative and integral approach assumed in ensuring the rights of civil servants.
