Monitoring visit to Kudakudhinge Hiyaa

The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives conducted an inspection visit to 'Kudakudhinge Hiyaa'(Government Shelter for Homeless Children)' operating under the former Ministry of Gender and family' located in Male' atoll Vilingili' on 12 November 2008. The inspection team from the commission included Commission Members and Staff.

 

This is the Commission's second visit to the institution, which currently fosters 42 children including a 10 day old baby. In today's visit the Commission especially looked into the degree to which the recommendations put forward by the HRCM in its report based on the findings of the visit carried out on 1 August 2007 has been implemented.

 

A report on the recommendations and findings based on this inspection visit will be publicized shortly.

HRCM has concluded its awareness workshop held in Faafu Atoll

The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives has concluded its awareness workshop held in Faafu Atoll from the 6th to 8th of November 2008. This workshop was aimed at senior administrative staff of Faafu atoll including Atoll Chiefs, Island Chiefs, Magistrates, Senior Police and MNDF Officers, senior members of Women's Development Committees, senior personnel of hospitals, health centers and schools.

 

The objective of this workshop was to increase basic human rights awareness as well as that of constitutional rights along with the rights ensured by the international conventions Maldives is party to. The workshop will also look at the roles, responsibilities and the functions of the Human rights Commission and Commission's Act.

 

This workshop has been conducted in Haa Alif, Haa Dhaal, Kaafu, LHaviyani, Seenu and Fuvah Mulaku Atoll this year and a similar workshop will be conducted in Dhaal Atoll before the end of the year.

A human Rights Commission of the Maldives team has left to Faafu Atoll NIlandhoo today to conduct an awareness workshop on human rights. This workshop is aimed at Atoll level administrative staff and will be conducted from 6-8 November 2008. The workshop will be facilitated by HRCM members, Mariyam Azra Ahmed and Ahmed Abdul Kareem along with staff of Education and Media Department.

HRCM president says that it will be a responsibility of the new government to bring the people of this nation together

At a press conference held at the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives today, the President of the Commission Mr. Ahmed Saleem stated that Commission is grateful to all the institutions and individuals who took the responsibility to ensurethat the 2008 Presidential elections was a peaceful and ceremonious event.
