Human Rights Commission of the Maldives

Press Release PR-008/2012

Published on 10-02-2012

Protests that took place on 8 February 2012 left some people injured, and damaged private property and realty. Obstructing law enforcement authorities from carrying out their duties, setting fire to Police Centers and Courts, and creating much chaos in different parts of the country obstructed the essential services from these places, and violated the human rights of a number of people. Such actions should not take place in an Islamic and Democratic society, under any circumstance.

This commission is now looking in to the human rights issues relevant to these incidents. The Commission requests other institutions investigating these incidents to refrain from any cruel, inhumane and degrading action against anyone at the time of arrest or during investigation, and to fully realize the rights of persons arrested. The Commission also requests everyone to abstain from all actions and rumors that may lead to chaos and fear in the society.

The fundamental rights and freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution should be enjoyed responsibly. To create a peaceful and stable environment, everyone should prioritize dialogue and keep away from anything that may lead to enmity and violence. Therefore, we request to settle social and political conflicts through dialogue, to renounce resentment and hatred, to embrace beautiful Islamic manners, and to work together towards creating a peaceful, democratic environment where rights are respected.
