APF sub-regional workshop to be held in Maldives

Asia Pacific Forum of National Human Rights Institutions (APF), in affiliation with Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM), will be hosting a sub-regional workshop for South Asian National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) in Maldives.

This weeklong program will be held from May 30 to June 3, 2010 at Bandos Island Resort & Spa, Maldives. The main focus of this workshop will be on understanding and engaging with the international human rights system.

Twenty seven participants from national human rights commissions of India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Maldives will participate in this workshop. The workshop will be facilitated by APF expert consultant, Prof. Chris Sidoti, and Suraina Pasha from the APF. The workshop will be inaugurated by Maldives’ Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Dr. Ahmed Ali Sawad.

This Sub-Regional Training Workshop on 'National Human Rights Institutions and the International Human Rights System' will provide participants with an overview of the development of international human rights law, how those laws are monitored and the practical steps that NHRIs can take to contribute to regional and international human rights systems. It will also look at the international standards that apply to NHRIs and the factors that can strengthen the independence and effectiveness of their work at a national level. APF is the main regional organization of NHRIs in the Asia Pacific with fifteen full members and two associate members. HRCM is an associate member of APF since September, 2007. This is the first time a regional human rights training workshop is being held in the Maldives.
